Artist Statement

Being a history student with fine art background, my recent academic research revolves around the history of Islamic patterns with a special focus on Mughal architecture of the subcontinent- a distinctive blend of the Persian artistic influence and indigenous Indian techniques and motifs.

I am using references of intricate patterns of traditional ‘Jaalis’ or roshans, in my paintings, which are rooted in the harmony and symbolism of the art and architecture of subcontinent. Since I have been focusing and working on visual technologies and their relationship with human subjectivity across the intersection of identity, body, spaces and image. In my new practice, I am separating different spaces which are collected from Mughal miniature paintings, traditional jaali patterns and medieval European art, to create a more subtle complex relationship between the East and West, the subjective and objective, the public and private and the role of mediation. These symbols are not only working as decorative elements for aesthetic beauty, but also serving various spatial, social, cultural, religious and climate functions
