Jamal Ahmed

Biography

Jamal Uddin Ahmed is a distinguished Bangladeshi artist whose career spans several decades and reflects a deep commitment to artistic exploration and excellence. Born in Dhaka in 1955, he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka in 1978, where he laid the foundation for his formal training in painting.

Following his studies in Bangladesh, Jamal pursued advanced artistic research at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, completing a two-year research program that broadened his technical and conceptual approach. In 1982, he relocated to Japan to further his practice, studying oil painting at the University of Tsukuba until 1984. He continued at the same institution and earned his postgraduate degree in 1986, an experience that significantly shaped his mature artistic language.

Jamal’s work is widely recognized for its distinctive style and innovative treatment of form, colour, and emotion. Drawing inspiration from nature and the inner landscape of human experience, his paintings often evoke a broad spectrum of emotions—ranging from ecstasy and bliss to longing, pain, and yearning. Through these themes, he creates works that resonate with both personal introspection and universal feeling.

Over the course of his career, Jamal has emerged as a prominent figure in the Bangladeshi art scene and beyond. In recognition of his significant contributions to the arts, the Government of Bangladesh awarded him the Ekushey Padak, the country’s second-highest civilian honor, in 2019. His enduring dedication to painting continues to inspire artists and audiences alike.
