About his paintings

Known for his large canvases, broad strokes and vibrant colors that signify M.A Bukhari creativity and aesthetic sensibilities, Karachi-based artist, uses the paint quite generously, applying it in thick layers with an abandon that is eye-catching and bewildering at the same time.

Bukhari describes beauty through his painting techniques and blends modern art magnificently with cultural and religious values.

His major works are pure play of colors other than the technique he uses in different mediums and styles. A short association with the Late Ismail Gulgee has significantly helped Bukhari develop as a colorist. Well known for the use of bright colors which make his works prominent, his brush strokes on the canvas speak of his mastery and facility in painting. Bukhari is highly influenced by Islamic heritage and this can be seen on his canvas with a strong background of bright colors in calligraphy.

Mohammad Ali Bukhari has designed a scalpel-like pen to give a visual impact of his individualistic Arabic calligraphy, so that he can engrave letters into layers of oil color. This technique has paid off well, each work acquires sharply delineated aesthetic-decorative depth and swell each letter and work as a whole, making his paintings even more enjoyable for those who relish grace and beauty of Arabic script.

He is drawn to bright vibrant colors and his compositions are embellished with a variety of old calligraphic seals and different textures. Balanced, aesthetics and modern forms are all well integrated in his work and result in art which is rich and creative in nature.

He uses impasto technique, which is popular in Italy. The impasto method of dealing with oil color layers, thickly and densely daubed on canvas with palette knife has been deftly employed. Impasto is a technique in which thick layers of colors are used to create impression. You can see the creative energy in his work, though bright in colors his canvas reveals clearly his expression which he wants to convey through them.
